It seems that the everything was told about Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg. The book “The Accidental Billionaires” shows the story from a different perspective.

The story begins at Harvard, but education isn’t the most important thing here. At least not in this story. Students beyond attendance at mandatory courses, trying to organize their social life. Many dreams about getting into one of the more or less elite clubs. Or in fact to be elected. Once you have become a member of the club, your life is really changing. The most important change is that the student begins to have success with women.

Eduardo Saverin really wants to get into a club and everything indicates that he has real chance. His colleague Mark Zuckerberg is not interested. He is only interested in computers and programming. He is not even interested in money, what he proved rejecting Microsoft‘s offer (but it was in the days before Harvard). When the two get to meet Bill Gates on meeting with students, Mark Zuckerberg sees his idol on stage, the man who really impresses him. Eduardo is not fascinated by the boss of Microsoft, but he likes money and knows how to get them. For example, thanks to passion for meteorology, he manages to earn 300 000 dollars from the stock market .

Eduardo gets into the club he wanted, meanwhile Mark proves to all that he is a talented programmer. He created Facemash, a website that allows to compare pictures Harvard’s students. The project brings him fame and some troubles. The project took attention of Winklevoos brothers who offer Mark a collaboration on the Harvard Connect. And basically from that time everything happens quickly.

Mark starts work on thefacebook, which in his opinion has almost nothing to do with the project of Winklevoos brothers. He He draws his colleagues from the room to project. The first is Eduardo, who is responsible for finance of company, what means that he’s making an investment worth $ 1,000. The other two colleagues are Chris Hughes and Dustin Moskovitz.

When Zuckerberg starting the project, he probably do not expect that within the next few years he become a billionaire, star of the business and the Internet. Meanwhile, website is becoming more and more popular, so popular that it attracts the attention of Sean Parker, the creator of Napster and Plaxo. This is the second idol of Mark Zuckerberg. Mark, Sean and Eduardo meet in New York, but this meeting chnages nothing.

Finaly Mark’s decision to move to Silicon Valley and a accidental meeting with Sean Parker changes the situation. Sean becomes advisor to Zuckerberg, and helps him in dealing with investors. Parker contact Mark Zuckernerg with Peter Thiel, founder of PayPal, as well as the head of the investment fund. Fund, which invests 500 000 dollars in the Facebook. And this is probably the best investment in history, today the shares bought for 500 000 are worth over a billion dollars.

Ben Mezrich author of the book shows Mark Zuckerberg as a man devoid of scruple. For him the most important is project of his life – Facebook. In less elegant way of he is parting with Eduardo, but on the other hand everything is done according to law. When Sean Parker is arrested with cocaine at a party, Zuckerberg has no doubt: Sean Parker has to go out of Facebook.

The symbolic moment is when Eduardo Saverin meets one of the Winklevoos brother in New York club. Eduardo stands in front of Winklevoos, shaking his hand and says: “We were all deceived.”

Frankly, after reading the book “The Accidental Billionaires” hard to feel sympathy for Mark Zuckerberg. You can admire his talent, but not the way he acts with men. But maybe if he didn’t take such decisions, Facebook would be popular only on Harvard.

In the book there are often appears the motif of the girls. It seems that the creators of websites have a lot in common with rock stars. They both motivate their actions in desire to gain the favor of girls. And how can you not believe that women rule the world?

What connects those three genetelmen on the picture? All of them once decided to fight with government. First two lost, and what about with the number three? Of course Lulzsec is not one person, but a few. Although nothing is sure. However they are still free. Probably for not long.

Kevin Mitnick before he was arrested by the FBI was considered as a leading hacker (though I actually should probably write cracker) in the world. “After the arrest, Mitnick spent four years and 5 months in prison before the judgment. They held him in complete isolation, as he joked: I could initiate a massive nuclear attack from a prison telephone. Many people considered him a hero fighting a ruthless corporations, which resulted in the creation of Free Kevin movement. “(Source: Wikipedia). Kevin Mitnick broke into the systems of various state institutions. The biggest mistake was probably burglary and theft of multiple files from Tsutomu Shimomura computer, who was FBI consultant. Shimomura led to the arrest of Mitnick.

Julian Assange is a hacker, but not a burglaries brought him fame and trouble. Assange created Wikileaks, the encyclopedia which is place to published documents, which normally no one would see. Wikileaks became famous when Assange published documents concerning the war in Afghanistan, Iraq and later diplomatic notes from U.S. embassies. Late last year, Sweden has issued arrest warrant for Assange, who was accused of sexual crimes. Assange reported to the police in England and was arrested. Today, he is in house arrest, and apparently Assange is not happy with this lifestyle.

Who are the people of Lulzsec we don;t know. What is certain is that they treading on very thin ice. Kevin Mitnick has posted on Twitter his opinion:

The team of Lulzsec conceives himself more boldly (for example, you can order burglary into a specific site of the government) and more often they teasing the tiger, the closer the end of their business they are. Even the most talented hackers / crackers do not have a chance in the long run with the government or governments. Lulzsec broke even into CIA website. (At this point we begin the creation of conspiracy theories Lulzsec is a group of people carrying out the operation under the auspices of the U.S. government code-named “Yes We Can” and after all the U.S. government will proactively censor the Internet. OK, end of joke). Playing with CIA is not the best way of spending free time, but everyone is playing as he likes. Lulzsec promise to break into another sites, as well as to public various stolen data.

And it’s not funny anymore.

I know that everyone wants to know the secrets, especially those most guarded by government. It’s hard to say what will serve us better: true or unawareness. Problem lies in the fact that you can predict what with such a information unfriendly countries can do. I would prefer not to experience that.

I wonder why so unpopular on the map of hackers’ activity are China, Korea and other countries well known with their love to human rights …

I have received mailing from Euroflorist.pl which is company delivering flowers. They’re great, I am regular client and I am little confused.

I have no pretensions to Euroflorist about this mailing. It is rather a proof that it is worth to consider what and to who you’re sending mailing. And you should think a few times. Errors, I think, can not be avoided in 100%, but it is worth to (and should) do everything what is possible to make it to minimum.

I am using Euroflorist.pl services quite often and I have to admit that the level of service is high. Complaint occurred to me once, and the problem has been resolved in a manner worthy of praise. I can not complain about them. What is more, they know how to stop the client, for example, through a policy of discount and mailings.

Yesterday I got mailing entitled: Your dad wants attention!

Well, I was strongly surprised, because the topic in the context of my situation sounded like grim joke, British joke or specific guide sent by the service of … the cemetery. Unfortunately my father is dead, therefore the information that demands attention – well, you should understand how it sounds.

In Euroflorist.pl, someone assumed that all customers having mothers and fathers. The assumption in principle is correct, because everyone has parnets. The problem is that not all parents are alive, and some people for various reasons do not want to remember their parents. It happens. In Euroflorist.pl someone assumed that Father’s Day is approaching and tjey should take this opportunity, send the mailing, which will give x% of the additional orders. (Although let’s face it, that we give flowers to women, gentlemen prefer other gifts). In Euroflorist.pl likely someone has thought that such a mailing won’t be received negatively, it can’t arouse negative emotions or to make someone upset.

I really do not intend to condemn the company (and I will certainly use their service in the future). This mailing made me just to think, as being on the other side (and I happen to me to send mailings often) protect yourself from these stories. The easiest way would be to ask the users if they wishes to receive mailings. For example, if you want to receive notifications of upcoming Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, the Day of Grandfather and Grandmother’s Day, etc.

While this may not be a problem, and I’m exaggerating. Quite possibly.

I think everybody who manage a fanpage on Facebook heard about Socialbakers. But I am not sure how many people knows that company that is owner of Socialbakers is based in beautiful Prague. I talked with Jan Rezab, CEO of Socialbakers about service and few other things.

The idea of interview came to me when I received an email from Jan Rezab informing that I became a Socialbakers Consul. What’s all about? You can find more information on Socialbakers.com and in the interview. I am still curious how this programm will contribute to all of us but I see great advantage now – it’s possibility to contact and share the knowledge with experts from all overt the world.. It’s priceless.

OK, let’s talk with Jan Rezab now:

- Socialbakers.com is run by Candytech. What you do at Candytech and who are the top managers?

- I am the CEO of Candytech/Socialbakers. Originally Candytech is a social media agency, and Socialbakers was the product. We will now be renaming the entire company to Socialbakers, and Candytech will stay the division. We are in total 4 co-founders of the company.

- How you came up with the idea for Socialbakers.com?

- The idea came when we did not want to reload statistics all day long manually, so we said as social media gurus, we have to make it easier for us.

- How you came up with the idea for Socialbakers Consuls and Ambasadors? Can you describe the idea for people who knows nothing about it?

- Dont know where the idea came from originally, but a lot of our clients are asking us to build loyalty programs for them to be able to identify their top fans and key influencers. We just wanted to do the same thing for our brand – Socialbakers.

- How succesful Socialbakers.com is in your opinion? Did you reached already your business goals?

- We think the user success is great. To be self-critical, I think we can still get many times bigger, but we are satisfied, and hope to grow faster soon.

- Is there Analytics only place that make an income for Socialbakers.com? Are you satisfied with the level on income?

- It is the Socialbakers PRO products – Socialbakers Analytics and Socialbakers CMS. We are entrepreneurs, which means were can never be satisfied and hope we can perform better soon. We have hundreds of companies.

- Can we except any US company investment in Socialbakers.com? I found an information on Facebook that you are moving to USA.

- You can expect us to move soon, and you can expect more news on this area. I can nor confirm or deny the investment.

- What you did before Candytech and Socialbakers in your professional life?

- I had a mobile content and mobile games company. Good times, I did it for 8 years, looking back, it was a great experience. I did not exit that company successfully, but it was a great ride.

- What social media means for you?

- Social media and social networking specifically means that the experience that people have online or on their mobile gets more personal, and that will mean a great improvement in relevance, user experience, and speed of connection.

- And what Facebook is for you? When we can expect Facebook stops to grow and the number of users stops to increase?

- Personally, its a great tool I use every day to keep in touch, contact, socialize. Professionally, its our daily bread, our love, and what we breath every day.

- What would be next internet hype after social media: geolocalisation, augmented reality, maybe something other?

- Definitely mobile.

- How you see Internet in next few years? What can we expect in your opinion?

- I see the entire internet evolving to be much more social, we can expect everything from reading news, shopping, and brand engagement happen in the social world. Once you try the social experience, you dont want to go back.

- What can we expect from Socialbakers in close and further future?

- Well, I don’t want to be giving anything out away, I guess you will have to wait and see, and looking at our portal, we are progressing very much in the Socialbakers PRO offering, including Analytics (http://analytics.socialbakers.com) and Facebook page management technologies (http://cms.socialbakers.com)

- Thanks for conversation.

From “Obssesed with Facebook” infographic you can learn many interesting things (mostly about Americans).

Americans wake up in the morning and…

48% people of 18 – 34 starting their day with checking what has happened on Facebook while the slept. 28%
of people is so hungry of information that they even not getting out of bed. I even understand them because I am turning my TV on with favourite news channel when I’m walking to kitchen to brew my morning coffe. And if we’re talking about news…

48% of young Americans find news at Facebbok. If I understand meaning of “news” in this contect, than CNN heads have a problem. It looks that for many Americans CNN might not exist. Unfortunately Facebook replacing not only TV.

57% talks more often on Internet than in real life. It’s a sad news and not good perspective for the future. Especially that cutting from reality has its consequences. Brits should be afraid:

British students asked what is most important for them said: mobile phones, Facebook, and finaly sex. It’s just a question of time when someone invents special equipment, apllications and hardware that let to reproduce. We could see this in Demolition Man movie (watch from 1:50)

Internet advertising is not acceptable for many users. They can’t imagine using the Internet without AdBlock (it’s Firefox plugin which blokcs many of online ads). According to Interaktywnie.com number of Adblock users in Poland is nearly 800,000. I asked Bartosz Wieczorek, President of Ad-Vice whether this phenomenon is the problem for online advertisement brokers.

- Interaktywnie.com says that about 780,000 users per day browsing websites with Adblock. Number of users is still growing. Is this a problem for your company?

- It’s truth that number of users who use AdBlock is growing but it is still a very small percentage of users only slightly exceeding the limit of statistical error. There will be no big growth in near future. At the same time we developing technology of displaying advertisements. We implement the latest solutions in this matter so AdBlock is not any threat. In most cases, Adblock blocks standard banners and we are slowly moving away from putting standard display ads. We are more interested in newer and more effective advertising solutions. We take care that not annoy users with our advertisements.

- What is the share of display campaigns in all campaigns that Ad-Vice does?

- For our customers, and most of them are agencies, we realize the branding and sales campaigns and we’re using all available media formats, focusing on non-invasive forms. Display campaigns it’s approximately 60-70% of all carried out by our network.

-What do you think about the future of display advertisement due to growing numer of users who hates this formats? I hear every year that display ads are dying.

- The future of display advertising is bright. In our opinion, we just starting to see that ot was mistake to evaluate this format because of CTR.

- All the studies show that the main value of display ad is a visual contact with the transmission. Thanks to that, message reaches the awareness of recipient in the unprocessed way. In this the power of advertising lies, including display advertisement. But we have to change the way of thinking to use this potential. We need to focus on the visibility of advertising, the average contact time with ad and the presence of advertising in the field of view of user. Most of the ads on the Internet does not meet those requirements. We must also search for new advertising solutions. Formats introduced by us (eg, screening with clickable wallpaper) is a perfect illustration of that is possible to merge barnding effect of ad with big number of click in the ad.

Commentary: On one hand I understand the Internet users who hate online advertisement. Honestly – from time to time I’m considering to start using AdBlock. However I do not do this for two reasons. First, I understand that publishers need to earn. I know very well that running a website generates costs that must be covered. But no one does business only to cover costs. If publishers do not make money on advertising, they will begin to make money on subscriptions. But I doubt it’s possible to avoid advertisements even in subscription model. It may not be invasive, but do not disappear, we should not delude up. Therefore, with respect to publishers I do not deprive them income. Secondly, I’m not using AdBlock of professional curiosity, I just like to know what is happening in the advertising. Another thing that when I tested Adblock (this was long ago and this could change), the plugin was able to cut out the parts of websites that are not advertisement. How will the future of advertising online look like? AdBlock will not defeat online advertisement. Rather, we can expect more video ads. I also feel that the ads would be bigger and louder than at present, although in this case I would be wrong.

Website which he is creator of, had a debut today at stock market and it was a very successful debut. The company’s shares earned 108% in first day. Who is Reid Hoffman?

Born in Stanford (California), grew up in Berkeley. He studied at Stanford University and Oxford University. Even considered a career in research, but he concluded that he can achieve more in business.

“When I finished studying at Stanford I had a plan to become a professor. It was not about quoting Kant. The idea was to target the community and the question of “who we are” and “what we should be, as individualists, and society.” But I realised that scientists write books, which reads about 50 – 60 people, and I wanted to have a greater impact “(source: Cree, Richard (July 2009).” Well connected “. Director magazine.).

So Hoffman entered the business world, he worked at Apple, Fujitsu, and then started dating website SocialNet.com. He was also vice president of PayPal, including the time the service was taken over by eBay.

He founded Linkedin in 2003 and became the first CEO.

According to the book The Facebook Effect, by David Kirkpatrick, Hoffman arranged the first meeting of Mark Zuckerberg and Peter Thiel. As a result, Thiel invested $500,000 in Facebook. Hoffman also made an investment.

Reid Hoffman is one of the most well-known investors in Silicon Valley. He invested in Zynga and the company is currently valued at $ 5 billion. Other Hoffman’s investments include Flickr, Digg, Ping.fm, Last.fm. For nearly six years he is in the Board of Mozilla Corporation.

Reid Hoffman realized his plan no doubt. He has a big impact on the world.

A good employer branding video happens so often as a solar eclipse. It is very strange because such a movie can do much good, and its creation is not the cost of Hollywood productions. On the other hand, video is good when you have a good idea, and this is even more difficult to get than a budget. But there are videos that can be considered as a model to follow (not copy).

One of the companies which creating such a videos has led to perfection is Google. Here’s one excellent example:

2 minutes 20 seconds during which we learn a lot about how and with whom they are working in the company. The video shows that in the company works people of different nationalities, races, ages, etc.. We know that Google employees have at the office yoga, Pilates, and food (free of course) better than in many a New York restaurants. This video concerns about the work in the New York office, but if you are interested in other locations (such as London, Dublin and Santa Monica is not a problem. Similarly, if you wanted to know how the interview looks like)

But not only Google knows how to use the video to show the company values that it’s always hard to present. Just imagine the slogan “we guarantee work in a relaxed atmosphere.” Something similar you can easily find in in almost every recruiting announcement (at least here in Poland) and because of that not many people calls attention to this statement. Similarly, the “work in young ambitious team.” And how to show work with special people? For example, as Intel did:

Intel has prepared a series of videos that should be mandatory material for any person dealing with employer branding. Let’s watch Intel Rock Stars:

Our jokes are different than yours:

Our parties are different than yours:

Our team players are different than yours:

OUr meetings are different than yours:

And how to present the company, which very very serious? For example, just as it was done in the case of Deloitte: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMRo9Ye5FLU

Another interesting video was created by KPMG (in this video you will find the statment: the place where is a balance of both private and professional life):

Another example is video “I am IBMER”, representing IBM employees who say, why they work in this particular company. Just minutes to learn a lot:

Microsoft’s recruitment video, aimed at potential employees of research department. Longer, more serious, but with a lot of particulars:

And here’s another example (Microsoft again) how to show recruitment process:

Employer branding movies are not only what companies do. America’s Army does it for long time:

As you can see business and army talks in similar language, reffering to almost the same values. In the end not from today, “Art of War” is very popular book among managers.

Google for many years to occupy the top (usually the first) place in the rankings of the world’s best employers. The employment in Mountain View based company is a dream of millions (no exaggeration in this.) Interestingly, in the rankings you will not find Facebook. Is this the effect of working conditions in Paolo Alto, or negligent employer branding action?

Google has mastered the art of building the image of an employer of choice. And even the employee’s dream. Here’s what it comes to employer branding. If you ask any of programmers if they would like to work at Google, most would answer that yes, of course. Meanwhile, from two independent sources (one Polish, the other German), I heard that Google’s wages aren’t the highest in the industry. However, it is so much other non-wage factors that make many people (let’s add a talented and with great knowledge) to accept lower wages. It is also evidence of Google as a good employer.

If you look at the results of The World’s Most Attractive Employers in 2010 both in terms of Global Top 50 Business, conducted by Universum

Vain to look Facebookin the ranking of, even at the remotest places. Similarly, in the ranking of World’s Top 10 Engineering & IT:

And indeed, if you ask someone from the industry seen what he thought of Google as an employer will generally spoke positively. If the same thing we ask in the context of Facebook is likely to hear: I do not know. If we look for online information about working in Facebook you will rather find articles about how people lost their job because of the Facebook.

When Google became big company many professionals left Microsoft to join offices in Mountain View. It is known as a legend when Steve Ballmer could not resist another employee leaving company to Google and threw a chair against the wall. Probably Larry Page or Sergey Brin do not destroy their furniture, but they also felt what does it mean the appearance of a competitive employer that tempts top employees to terminate contract. In such situations usually always comes to the rotation, the trick is to keep the best employees. And if you believe to media reports Google hasn’t lost so many employees to Facebook, as Microsoft to Google.
