Alec Brownstein, born in 1980. He worked at Publicis New York, Maxim Magazine and BBDO New York. He became known through the Google Job Experiment. I asked him about the experiment, personal branding and very popular in the U.S. Pandora.com

What made you to do Google Job Experiment? You have been tired of sending CV or you just decided to something unusual to get your dream job?

My goal was to showcase my creativity directly to the people for whom I wanted to work. In my industry, we don’t really use CV’s – it’s all about our portfolio of work. I wanted to get attention for my portfolio, and create a new piece for it at the same time.

Your experiment took some time (few months) so it’s a way for people who are not in hurry. What would you do if you need job immediately. Would you use Internet also?

Getting a job is a slow process. Even when companies are in a rush to hire, there’s still a lot of paperwork and approvals before anything happens. I suppose if I needed to make a move right away, I would probably start by calling all of my friends at agencies that I liked. From there, I would ask them if they could arrange an informational meeting with a manager. Then I’d have to make it clear in the interview why they needed to hire me immediately. Sadly, if there’s no job or money available, you won’t get a gig no matter what you do. But nothing beats a face-to-face meeting when trying to get a job.

You received awards for your experiment. Have you got any other advantages of your experiment beside this prizes and job at Y&R?

In a tough economy, I think it’s nice to hear the success story of someone who was looking for a job and actually got it. I’ve gotten a lot of emails from people around the world who say that my experiment was an inspiration for them to start thinking creatively about their own job hunting process. Those email have felt very rewarding to me.

Have you heard about people who was inspired by your experiment and they did something similar?

I have heard about one person within the advertising industry who tried to use the same Google Ad technique. But because jobs in the creative department at advertising agencies are all about originality, I don’t think it was successful.

Have you seen Dave Berzac video cv? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV0OgsRK0Bc) Did you think about this way of promoting yourself?

I hadn’t seen that video. It’s cool. Unfortunately, I don’t have the singing or dancing skills to pull off something like that.

On your website I found Pandora.com advertisement that you made. Pandora.com is available only for US citizens. Do you use it? And can you say is it really so revolutionary online radio as media describe it?

The Pandora.com advertisement was a spec radio commercial that I created for an advertising contest. I do use Pandora.com, and I think it’s fantastic. I do believe that internet radio, like Pandora.com and Last.fm, will be the future of radio, even in cars.

What do you think about personal branding in Internet? Do you care about it?

Personal branding is important insofar as when someone searches for you on the internet, you want to control the information that they find. Just like dressing well for a good first impression in a job interview, you want potential employers to have a positive impression of your online presence. You don’t want the first thing they see to be a picture of you on Facebook chugging a beer.

What would you today if you have to search for another job?

If I had to find another job today, I would probably email the potential employers a link to the Google Job Experiment and say, “Remember this? I did it!”

It looks that it last summary of the year before the Christmas and another one will appear after this time. OK, let’s Lucian Bitai to speak. You know what, 6 questions first:

1. What was 2009 for your company or your department?
2. What will the year 2010 for your company or your department?
3. What was the most important event in the Internet industry in 2009 in your opinion?
4. What you think the Internet will be the end of 2010?
5. What is – in your opinion – the most important website of 2009?
6. Who and why is the Man of the Year 2009 of the Internet industry in your opinion?

And of course six comprehensive answers:

1. 2009 was a very surprising year that started with lots of less than optimistic outlooks induced by the global economic crysis, but in the end turned out very well thanks to the great team here. Interestingly enough, chip.de is one of the success stories that emerged from this crysis, as the strategies put in place to limit the damage of the crysis led in the end to all time record results, that topped even the “normal” years! The appropriate motto would be “Why waste a good crysis?”

2. 2010 will mean for my department – Download.chip.eu and Download.chip.asia – a new phase of development. New strategies to cope with the various conditions in so many countries (12 so far), new approaches and a closer cooperation with our international partners. Also, it is the year for “Version 2.0″ of our portal, with new features that we hope will become success stories. It is also a very challenging year for me personally, as I will be coordinating a new international sales and cooperations structure, besides our Country Managers team.

3. The global crysis. A crysis is always a time of changes and I think that this one – although unfortunately very damaging for our Print colleagues – is only paving the way for online’s predominance in the future.

4. Not very different I presume from what it is now. Although hopefully things will have recovered enough after the crysis so that the word “survival” should be less used in the online world. New “wonderkids” like Facebook or Twitter might emerge (who could ever predict what the “next big thing” in Online will be?). I agree with Oliver that it will be bigger, better and faster and I would also add more democratic and more personal. Social networks will tend to be a more and more important source of information, accesible even for people who do not have a free media – see what happened earlier this year with Twitter and the events in Iran. If you ask me what Online will be in 10 years from now, that is a completely different story. Internet access might just become essential for life sustainability, just like air and food – and this means that working in the Online industry might just be a very, very good idea

5. The same as in most of the previous years – Google. Too important, if you ask me, even though it is the “do no evil” company we are talking about. Let’s not forget what happens when too much power gets into very few hands.

6. I do not think there is a specific Man of the Year in the online world. Just as in every year, the Man of the Year is every Internet user who is shaping the way we communicate online and is defining what Online really is. (There would be no Google, Facebook or Twitter as we know them, without their users.) As I said above, this medium is too democratic, widespread and personal in the same time to allow the existence of a “Man of the Year”. Unless somebody reinvents it completely and makes it available to 100% of the world’s population – in which case this person would definitely be worthy of TIME magazine’s Man of the Century title.

Lucian Bitai is editor of Download.Chip.eu and Download CHIP.asia at Chip Xonio Online GmbH in Munich. In the past he was Country Manager for Chip.Download.eu in Romania. We workd together on this project from the very beggining. After hours Lucian is a German Authobans fanatic supporter (me too to be honest) and has a great memory and I am convincing myself about this every time I try to recall the name of one of great Munich restaurant Beside he is great manager always on time with his topics and I envy him a little bit of that.

Today another two online managers, and first is Marek Janouš.
6 questions:

1. What was 2009 for your company or your department?
2. What will the year 2010 for your company or your department?
3. What was the most important event in the Internet industry in 2009 in your opinion?
5. What is – in your opinion – the most important website of 2009?
6. Who and why is the Man of the Year 2009 of the Internet industry in your opinion?

6 answers:

1. 2009 was the year of cutting costs… :-/

2. 2010 will be the year when projects will either prove their validity, or be killed.

3. The growth of Facebook, its massive adoption throughout Europe

4. Leveraging “social media” by companies big and small will be commonplace; more people will actually know how to do it.

5. Facebook

6. No opinion

And, by the way, I have a hunch that Google Wave will not matter that much. I believe most people will not be convinced.

On the other hand, e-books may yet surprise us. I believe, at the end of 2010, e-books will be more affordable, more commonplace, more adapted to other-than-US markets, will have even better screens etc.

And, oh wait, my bet is that by the end of the year 2010, Twitter will have its business model figured out.

Marek Janouš is Country Manager of Download.Chip.eu at Vogel Burda Communications in Czech Republic. In the past he was editor of Počítač pro každého and PC Magazine. Marek was also working for Seznam.cz – the most popular search engine in Czech Republic (yes it’s truth – there are places in the world where Google hasn’t dominant position). We worked together in past years in Country Managers group for Download.Chip.eu

1. The time of capture the distance, reviewing priorities and search for the most effective cost solutions for clients. Surprisingly good in terms of scale and increase the time spent by users in the context of the ongoing projects.

2. Year of new opportunities. Transition period between the crisis end and the coming boom, which in Poland will significantly stimulate EURO 2012, but also the burning awarded in 2009 grants from the EU.

3. Introducing Google Ad Planner tool. A similar solution has grown through the SEM market. Very probable is the revolution in the planning advertising at Internet.

AdMob purchase by Google, dynamic sales growth of mobile phones with networking, the emergence of indigenous operators offer, such as 100 minutes, SMS or MB or free use of YouTube to swallow the changes in consumption and work with the medium, also in Poland. It’s a time for Mathias Plica, President of Chip Xonio Online GmbH.
Mandatory questions:

1. 2009 for CHIP Online was a good year with very healthy growth. Why that? Because we have size, that matters in terms of reach, and because we feel the dramatic shift of advertising dollars coming to the web from other media. The global economic crisis has accelerated this shift.

2. We are positive about 2010. We expect continuing growth and healthy business.

3. The most important event probably was the move of Mr. Murdoch towards paid content business models. This is great for anybody, who understands the industry: As long as large players do such things and others follow, because
they think it is the right way, the companies who know better have a large opportunity to gain market share.

4. More important in terms of advertising dollars than ever.

5. Well, yes, hmm, I mean, who cares, what else, Google again, ooops …

6. The most important Man of the Year is any CEO of media businesses, who has understood, that the general economic crisis of 2009 was not the reason for the media crisis, but just the accelerator of far deeper structural changes in the business.

Mathias Plica is managing director of Chip Xonio Online GmbH. I met Mathias naturally while working in the VBC and he was my “guide” for both the head office in Munich and the Internet business in a very large scale (where not only the unique visitors are counted in millions). Mathias oversee our work on Download.Chip.eu, and helped me a lot of timeswith all business aspects related to the sites, which I had managed at VBC. He was also making life of Country Managers easier.

I asked the same 6 questions to everyone. First who summarize year 2009 is Oliver Greune.

Here are 6 questions:

And there are Oliver’s answers:

1. A collaps for our core market – the automotive industry – that means -20% in print ad revenues and +/-0% in online. In total we grew in online much faster than the total market.

2. Print business should recover a little. Online in special interest segemts will constantly grow.

3. The global crisis – because it was one of the next catalyst for the success of online media and performance because of its ROI focus.

4. Bigger, faster, better – but, online will get into the radar of Brussels competition watchdog.

5. Evergreens – google, amazon, ebay. They are huge and they earn money.

6. It´s a girl. My 4 year old daughter. She is my daily example of digital natives. Watching her using an iphone or asking for VOD is like having a look in a marble.

Oliver Greune is Head of Business Development Online at Motor Presse Stuttgart GmbH. We met when Oliver was working (he was Founder/Director Portal Business & Marketing) at CHIP Xonio Online GmbH (Munich, Germany) and I was working at Vogel Burda Communications as a Head of Online Department. We worked together on international download platform (Download.Chip.eu) and also Oliver explained to me some a lot of business and e-marketing aspects. Oliver’s blog.

About Quorthon of Bathory, I had the conflicting opinions. Some say that this guy who devours journalists at the outset, others that he is not available. Similarly, with his interests. In one interview I read that he likes football, and he says that he prefers hockey. And Quorthon doesns’t like football thanks to our goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski.

Quorthon is a specific person, and anyone who knows a little Bathory have no doubt about that. Long ago, Bathory was black metal band. Now it’s a completely different band, if band is the appropriate word. And he Quorthon is a very nice man.

- First of all, congratulations for new album

- Thanks a lot. I am glad that you like. \For me it is very important.

- Could you describe the music of Bathory, for example to someone who has never met with your band?

- O man! This is the worst thing that could meet me (laughing). Wait a moment I think. (while of thinking) We can define this music as a brutal Viking bathory music (laughing). It is hard to me to talk about it, especially now, because the new album is quite diverse.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=F6F6E8&IS2=1&bg1=F6F6E8&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=molickinet-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&m=amazon&f=ifr&asins=B000025M8P" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"align="left">
- Yeah, and at the beginning was the black metal. Later you changed the style of music. Not afraid to fans reaction?

- You know it was a long time, some 14 years ago. First, however, changed the lyrics than music. It was quite naturally, without any kind of revolution like – hey, we stop playing black metal, now we will play Viking metal. It was an internal process. When I changed topics in lyrics the natural consequence was the change in music. It must interact with each other.

- Maybe it’s just my opinion, but listening to the Destroyer sometimes I hear references to the works of Joy Division. For this particular cold wave climate from years ago.

- And you’re not wrong. In a sense, there is a bit of those elements. Without exaggeration, of course, but yes.

- Tell me what you need to create a song that you’re happy with?

- Oh my God. You kill me again (laughing)

- Another difficult question?

- (Laughter) There is no difficult questions there are only difficult answers. It somehow comes to the same, but if you wake up in the morning and can not wait to listen to this song, it means that it is good.

- I heard that you’re recording in the studio almost alone. Almost alone, because there are people who can help you. Do you prefer to record in this way. Is not it better to record with the entire band – guitars, keyboards, vocals, etc.?

- You know, Bathory was a regular band. Then just as we recorded. If you have a band and it is something between you, any bond, then it is definitely better.

- With the title of the new album, I have to admit, you’ve come to perfect. Is the title Destroyer may be Osama Bin Laden?

- When we started recording the album, no one imagined that New York may be place of such a tragedy. Many people associate the title with Bin Laden. And rightly so. But do not forget that Bin Laden is one of many. The war in Afghanistan had been. And the Philippines? And Oppenheimer (one of the creators of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki)? We can not forget that the evil began before Bin Laden. Of course we must remember what happened in September.

- George Harrison recently died. Liked the Beatles?

- I liked is not enough said. I have all CDs of the Beatles. Official, bootlegs. Beatles it was the most perfect band I know. Is much more than music. When I heard that Harrison had died I felt sorry. It’s as if someone close died.

- Let’s change a topic and let’s talk about something pleasant.

- Okay

- Argentina, England, Nigeria and Sweden. People say it’s Group of death. What do you think Sweden (Quorthon is from Sweden) has a chance to go to next stage?

- I believe so. But I must at once deny rumor, according to which I am a football fan. I prefer hockey. I remember Sweden playing with Poland and the Polish goalie… What is his name? Oh, I know Tomaszewski. He played so well that discouraged me to the football. We lost with you then, and probably we were eliminated of the tournament.

- It’s a pity that you do not like football. But if I can comfort you, Swedes made a payback. Recently in the European Championship qualifying. But can at least say who has a chance for World Cup.

- Big chance England has. Nigeria may cause surprise. Argentina and Brazil like always.

- I will bet on Poland, but it is obvious. This interview will appear in an online newspaper, in this connection I would like to ask you what you think of this medium. It is important to you?

- Even the most. Books are expensive in Sweden. And I very much like to read. Therefore, buy them by internet in the United States or in England. And cost me 50% less. And how the great potential for promoting the music gives. Yes, the Internet is very important to me.

- And can you attend less virtually in Poland? Fans are waiting!

- Very happy to come. Unfortunately, the gig is not what you can count on, but will gladly, for example, visit Warsaw. Beautiful architecture.

- Where in Warsaw? Okay, if you say so. Until then, before we had the opportunity to meet the finest architectural, please a few words to Polish fans.

- I am glad that there are people who see something more than the Backstreet Boys. I am glad that there are people who listen to metal. It was for them I create music and record albums. I hope that we will have the opportunity to meet. Greetings to all

- And I thank you for your time.

And at the end of Quorthon told me that the summer is to record the new album. And again we have a chance to talk to a nice man. Already am delighted. And now is the time to listen to Lake of Fire. This Viking hit
