DEATH – Symbolic

“Symbolic” is one of the most amazing records in the history of metal music and music history in general.

After a very technical album “Individual Thought Patterns” Chuck Shuldiner has recorded an incredible 52 minutes of music embedded in an atmosphere of death metal, drawing handfuls of art rock.  Well, maybe it’s a little exaggerating with those handfuls, but there is no denying that Chuck has recorded something absolutely amazing.

In this instance “Without Judgment” after acute and specific portions of juicy sound, masterful shrimp, suddenly and quite unexpectedly, the pace slows down. Heard only the guitar (this section can be safely placed on any Art rock album) and Mr. Hoglan. Moments later, there is bass (excellent selective) and the rhythm section starts to perfectly complement the guitar, which sounds almost purely first (ie, not distorted, with only a slight reverb) and after a few seconds very particular riff. And for a moment everything back to normal. So delicate ornament.

And how the album ends? No, no sound of the massacre, no extreme technical performances (previously were). ” Perennial Quest” closing this album lasts 8:18. Around 6:35 we hear only the acoustic guitar (!) And again the characteristic sound of famous guitar solos from “Without Judgment”. And so for over one and a half minute.

Of course there is no shortage of that with what is known Death. So there are changes in pace, brilliantly co-operating section, solo performance of which requires perfection and powerful riffs. Chuck’s vocals a bit milder than in previous productions, but this is just a plus.

“Symbolic” was introduced to the market in 1995, nearly 12 years ago. Over the years, none of its value is lost, and if anything has changed only in favor. I remember a huge impression that this music made on me in 1995.  A few months ago after a long separation from the work of Chuck I listened “Symbolic” again.  And again, I can not get away from this music.

And again, I have no doubt that the metal was created just there to Chuck Shuldiner be able to record such an album. It is a pity that Chuck nothing more will record. In any case, not here on earth.
