DEPECHE MODE – The Videos 86> 98

depeche mode the videos 86 98After the release of “The Singles 86 – 98” album, there appeared DVD “The Videos 86 – 98“. These two discs show fully (or almost fully) artistic achievements of one of the most important bands of 80s and 90s.

It shows the creativity and their way from new romantic to rock, from the band whose music was in every disco in 80s. to became an inspiration for musicians and fans of rock and gothic music.Great respect for the band that achieved so much is a must.

There are 22 music videos. And this what I think is missed here is more information about each of the video. Maybe I require too much, but it seems to me that it make the DVD more atractive.

“The Videos” creators put an interview with the band which they called “short film”. And it’s a real gem. Without any marketing efforts, sincerely and specifically band members talk about what happened within the band since the album “Black Celebration” was released.

Beside Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher and Alan Wilder (who had left Depeche Mode in 1995) we have a chance to hear the story of people directly involved in the successive stages of the band history.

As the record bears the title “Videos” there must be the interview with the creator of 18 Depeche Mode videos, famous photographer and director Anton Corbijn. There are also Gareth Jones (co-producer), Daniel Miller (founder and head of Mute Records), Flood (“Violator” and “Songs Of Faith And Devotion” producer) and Tim Simenon (DJ and producer of album “Ultra“).

From two reportages we can learn about how the band created “Black Celebration”, “Music For The Masses“, “101“, “Violator”, “Songs Of Faith And Devotion” and “Ultra” albums.

Musicians frankly talk about what happened at the times of “Devotion Tour” and after its completion. Dave Gahan says openly about his drug problems. Martin Gore notes that at some point no one wasenjoyed with what should enjoy everyone. Artists talk about meeting in the studio when they were checking whether they are able to work on together and they made an album. Sounds interesting? And that’s just part of the history of Depeche Mode.

And we have a viedos of course. From “Stripped” to “Only When I Lose Myself” is something which can be determined using one of the titles of Depeche Mode albums – “Music For The Masses”. But this is the most perfect music for the masses.
