Concerts of Finnish quartet Apocalyptica already behind us. Here are an interview, which was made about three weeks before the arrival of the Finns to Poland.
- What’s going on in Apocalyptica?
- As do you know we made a new album and starrting the tour. And I’m already happy because we have very pleasantly signals from the people regarding our album (“Cult”). We look forward even more that this is the first album, which largely consists of our own compositions. Now you see how will be in concert, because people know us as band of covers.
- You’re going on the tour, so what can we expect at your shows?
- It will definitely be a rock concerts. You will see the first time, Perttu, our new musician. His cello playing is incredible. All those who saw us on stage, I can promise that we will play at least as good as before. But if somebody did not saw our show, you will see the amazing cello sounds (and what about four!)
- And whether the change in the band affected your sound?
- I do not know whether the sound, but it certainly is a bit easier than with Antero. Now really feel that we are together, one band.
- And whether it is possible that one day you will be playing with Antero and Pertuu?
- It would be five of us in the band? No, I don’t think so. I think it quite enough for four cellos.
- OK., I would now ask you to told about “Cult” especially those who are not hear Apocalyptica, if such people are still in general?
- First of all, is the first album where most of the material are our compositions. Compositions are still maintained in the style of metal, but with a very large influence of classical music. I think the first time in band history, and I even venture to say that the history of music in general, classic and metal go hand in hand, are very close together. We obtained the sound from which we are proud, sound which we were looking for four years! And as you know, in our music faced other instruments, not only the cellos.
- Well, what happened that you have decided to use percussions?
- You know, this time we were much more receptive to music, and really our only assumption was to do good record with good sound, no matter how many instruments we use. We also had a plan to exploit the human voice, the singer. It would, of necessity write the words, very important lyrics. And already we have resigned because of this idea. These words, contained in several songs, they could bring the importance of the entire album for one thing. And percussions that we used in order to give our music even more expression.
- You said that the compositions have appeared on album classical music had big impact. So it is possible that one day Apocalyptica stops to play covers and starts to record only metal songs?
- No, definitely not. Apocalyptica is a metal covers band, energetic music.
- And tell me, which songs you like to play the most: those who Eicca wrote, metal covers or classical music?
- You know, in principle, I do not work in this way. Is simply a joy to play everything. Note that none of us ever playing one, for example, only just riffs or solos. Is constantly changing and every one of us still has the opportunity to play something else. And this is most exciting.
- And whether in playing the cello is any speed limit?
- (Laughter) maybe one day we’ll find the borders. It is also one of our mission to find all the possibilities that are in chellos. It’s also a chance to show to the audience that the cello serves not only to play one genre of classical music.
- Okay, music aspects rewritten. Now tell me what you do when not playing music?
- Definitely, if only I can I go skiing.
- And beyond that?
- I am so happy with nature that surrounds me, I like to walk through the woods. And besides, I am very interested in movies.
- And tell me how you dealing with stress? Your friend Eicca told me that a good way to be called “hard drinking night”
- (Laughter) “Hard Night Drinking” is one of the options. In Finland, a fairly common method is a sauna and a few beers
- And it is sufficient?
- You mean “sauna and a few beers” (permanent laughter). So enough. But sometimes it is good to move on from everything, and treat yourself to what Eicca said.
- Well, finally, that there should be so easy, I will ask you a difficult question. What would you do If you can not played in a band Apocalyptica?
- I would play a music I can not imagine anything else. I started playing since I was five and the whole time I was prepared for the profession of musician. I can not imagine my life without music. Maybe if I had not played music, I’d be a chef?
- But you are a musician who will play in Poland soon
- In December
- Thanks for conversation and see you soon.
- Regards for everyone!
